Our Stories CLT 1.0

Our Stories CLT is an innovative augmented reality (AR) mobile game that invites players to step into the role of a historical detective. Set against the backdrop of one of Charlotte’s oldest and most significant public cemeteries, the game encourages exploration on foot, leading players to uncover hidden documents that illuminate the rich histories interwoven within the fabric of the community.

The Pinewood and Elmwood Cemeteries, once segregated, serve as final resting places for individuals who significantly influenced Charlotte's development. Through the use of immersive AR technology, players can engage with their often-overlooked narratives, bringing to light stories that resonate with the city's past.

POTIONS & PIXELS developed this application in collaboration with Gökotta, the City of Charlotte, the Knight Foundation, and Google Fiber, alongside direct involvement from students in the North End and West End neighborhoods. Over a two-year period, these students gained practical knowledge of AR technology, participated in game design, and contributed valuable historical research.

One particularly poignant aspect of the experience is the AR representation of Pinewood Cemetery. While certain sections may appear vacant, they are, in fact, the resting places of countless individuals lacking headstones. The app honors these lives through virtual AR headstones and additional interactive experiences that invite users to reflect on their histories.

This project is an essential tribute to community heritage, showcasing how technology can enrich our understanding of local history.
